Until the 1960s, music was not considered an art form.
This, I learned from the Beatles Wikipedia, and it’s that vein that I question movies.
Just 3.3% of Blockbuster movies in the past 15 years were “highly rated and made for adults.” Scary numbers.
The rest are superhero movies and movies for kids aged 5-18.
Where are the Adults?
The Adult Class is shrinking.
The fact that I’m only able to garner the small handful of you on a weekly basis is sad.
You’re clearly intelligent. You’re opening these emails. As am I…
However, what I write and what I’m suggesting is happening to our society goes over the heads of almost everyone I interact with on a daily basis.
Anyone who is “triggered” instead of merely tiffed when someone says something that every so slightly shakes you, for a moment.
Everybody has a plan
Tyson said, “everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.”
Their plan is to not get punched in the face.
Ours is to expect it, and hit them back harder.
What it means
I started talking about movies and ended up here. Dark.
The reason I tell you this is because if 3.3% of movies are made for us, then it means the means to educate the public on what matters are eroding from our control.
We’re putting the future of our world in the hands of influencers on TikTok and Instagram. That would not be a good future.
So if movies are dead, they’re dead. We could revive them, but instead of thinking about the format let’s think about the experience.
Long live life
A movie is about 1.5 to 2 hours.
It’s a story. It has a beginning, middle and end. It’s a good value.
Its benefits include:
It helps you escape your reality
It gives you hope for a better future
It helped you see the world differently
It inspired you to be the best you can be
So we just need to find a medium where we can tell a story and is this long and has these benefits.
Now that would make a great movie!
